'The roof of Austria'
The Großglockner and Großvenediger are the highest mountains in Austria, which is why Osttirol is also called 'the roof of Austria'. This small region has 266 peaks above 3,000 meters, many of these peaks can be found in the Hohe Tauern National Park. The king of them all is the Großglockner (3,798 m), followed by the Großvenediger (3,666 m). Many villages can be found on the sunny side of the Alps. Lienz, the capital of Osttirol, almost exudes a tropical flair with its palm trees and blooming flowers. Hiking, mountain biking and cycling are the most popular activities during the summer months. In winter, Osttirol offers many ski areas, including the area at the foot of the Großglockner Groglockner Resort Kals-Matrei, 5 minutes from Gasthaus Post.
